After searching for hours Thursday morning and afternoon, officials suspended a search for a reported missing swimmer off the coast of Manhattan Beach, authorities said.

Los Angeles County lifeguards, Manhattan Beach firefighters and U.S. Coast Guard officials searched the water near 34th Street after someone reported they thought they saw someone go under the water, Coast Guard Petty Officer Aidan Cooney said.

Fifteen divers searched, while a Los Angeles County Fire Department helicopter looked from above. Lifeguards searched the surf line.

Just before noon, dive teams returned to the shore, having not found anyone, lifeguards said.

Beach lifeguards and baywatch rescue boats stayed out on patrol, but by 4 p.m., the search was called off as authorities found no evidence of a missing person in the water, nor were there additional reports that someone hadn’t returned to the shoreline, Cooney said.

The rescue effort was the third in less than a week along the Los Angeles County coastline. Lifeguards have been busy dealing with strong rip currents and swells, authorities said.
