Fulton begins search for new superintendent - The Morning Sun

Fulton school chief Paul Hungerford has been named the new superintendent of the Gratiot-Isabella Regional Education Service District taking over for Jan Amsterburg, who retired after more than a decade on the job.

That move now means the Fulton Board of Education must find a replacement of its own.

Hungerford was appointed interim superintendent at Fulton in December 2016, where he was serving as the middle school/high school principal, when then school chief Daymond Grifka was placed on administrative leave.

Grifika resigned Jan. 1, 2018 and Hungerford was named as his permanent replacement, while retaining his former job as middle school/high school principal.

The Fulton school board was aware that Hungerford had applied for the RESD position this past spring, according to Board President Karla Childers.

“He had been in contact with the board,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for him. We hated to see him go but we will still get to work with him. He’s always been an advocate for public education and now he gets to do it on a bigger stage.”

She noted that Hungerford had “always been great at getting the community involved” in school activities and helped pass a $9.5 million bond proposal in last November’s general election.

“He still has a son who is a freshman here so he will still be around,” Childers said.

Scot Henry, a former administrator in another district, has been named to serve as interim superintendent and middle school/high school principal until Hungerford’s replacement has been selected.

The board has hired the Michigan Association of School Boards to assist with the search, Childers said.

A survey of community residents and school staff is also being conducted to help develop a profile for what they think are the most important characteristics the person hired should possess.

Applications are being accepted until 4 p.m. Sept. 29. First round interviews will take place Oct. 13 and a second round on Oct. 19.

School officials hope to have the job filled by Nov. 1.

The board is offering a “competitive wage and benefit package” with a salary range from $105,000 to $115,000 annually.

The person hired, however, will serve as superintendent only and not in the dual capacity as the middle school/high school principal.

“We would like to separate those roles,” Childers said. “We will wait until the new administrator is hired to see what that looks like.”
