The financial institution will be opening a branch in Toronto in November. STEUBENVILLE — If you know of one of the region’s unsung heroes and have been planning to nominate him or her to be a Community Star, you are running short on time.
The deadline for nominations for the annual recognition of 10 residents from across the Tri-State Area is Tuesday.
Some things about the program have not changed since it was launched by the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times in 1998. The goal remains to honor area residents who go out of their way to help others, not to receive recognition or to have their names and pictures in the newspaper, but simply because it is the right thing to do.
One thing that has changed this year has been the addition of Main Street Bank as the presenting sponsor.
“We are proud to be the presenting sponsor and are looking forward to honoring those who don’t want to but should get the recognition they deserve,” explained Rich Lucas, the bank’s president and chief executive officer.
Nominees can come from Jefferson and Harrison counties in Ohio, Hancock and Brooke counties in West Virginia and Washington County in Pennsylvania.
The only criteria is that those whose names are submitted work to make a real difference in their communities by showing they care for those around them.
“We are happy to have Main Street Bank as the presenting sponsor,” said Ross Gallabrese, executive editor of the newspapers. “Our annual celebration always is a special event and, thanks to Main Street Bank, this year’s will really let our stars shine.”
Profiles of each of this year’s honorees will be included in a special section that will be published before the dinner, which is scheduled to be held Oct. 28 at Froehlich’s Classic Corner, located at the corner of Fifth and Washington streets in downtown Steubenville. Each honoree will receive an award and gift certificate from M&M True Value Hardware, 4148 Sunset Blvd.
“We realize that this is not what these folks are looking for, but we are excited to be able to give them the recognition they so richly deserve,” Lucas added.
There are no age restrictions or requirements — past stars have ranged in age from pre-teen to their 90s.
Lucas said the timing of the dinner is important for Main Street Bank — its newest branch is scheduled to open in November in Toronto.
“We’re excited about being able to expand,” Lucas said of the financial institution, which was founded in 2001. “We’re looking forward to being able to serve the residents of Toronto and the Jefferson County area very soon.”
He added that events like Community Stars fit perfectly with the values Main Street stands for.
“Our mission and goal is to serve our communities,” Lucas said. “Right in our charter, we are defined as a community bank. Our board of directors and our staff realize that we are here to serve our local communities.”
Nomination forms have been appearing regularly in the newspapers. Submissions are due Tuesday and can be mailed to Michael D.
