The latest on the St. Louis Cardinals’ manager search is that there is nothing new — and that’s by design.
It has been over a week since Mike Shildt’s stunning fire as St. Louis Cardinals manager. The team indicated it would strongly consider internal candidates and some external candidates – Skip Schumaker, Matt Holliday – emerged within minutes of the news being reported.
But there have been no updates or leaks since. Why?
The Padres have had leaks on their managerial search, with one of their first interviews being Shildt. Their list of candidates is wide ranging, according to reports, and includes veteran and potential first-time managers. The Mets, meanwhile, are looking for both a president of baseball operations and manager and while they are looking to fill the front office role first, seemingly every candidate of theirs has been leaked.
For the Cardinals, it’s been radio silence. It’s likely that nothing has changed from the day that Shildt was fired. Bench coach Oliver Marmol is the strong favorite to be the team’s next manager while Stubby Clapp is another strong internal candidate. But that there have been no leaks, and no indications on which way the team is leaning, is by design. They prefer it this way.
The Cardinals, however, want to move quickly with this hire and there should be clarity in the coming days and weeks. Ideally, they would have someone in place by the GM Meetings on Nov. 8, which would allow them to move forward with their offseason and begin to implement the new manager’s ideas.
But when it’s all said and done, the expectation is that Marmol will be the team’s manager. The front office and players hold him in high regard and it would be a popular move after firing Shildt, a beloved figure throughout the organization. The lack of leaks and updates through the first week of the search shouldn’t change that thinking.
