ABOUT THE MATCHUP

It's back to the asphalt and airlines for Tarleton following a 69-42 win over Paul Quinn on Friday in its home opener. Monday's game vs. the Bison kicks off the Texans' second three-game road trip in November. Impending dates with No. 4 Michigan on Wednesday and No. 1 Gonzaga will draw the headlines, but NDSU presents a unique challenge and dual opportunity for Tarleton to earn a signature road win.

  • Tarleton and NDSU are meeting for the first time in any sport.

  • The Texans are 1-1 all time against current Summit League members.

  • A victory on Monday would mark Tarleton's first-ever D1 nonconference road victory.

  • NDSU is 30-6 in home games since 2018 while Tarleton is 15-19 away from home in that stretch.

  • The Bison are ranked No. 24 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Top-25. A win over NDSU would be Tarleton's first in program history over any such opponent

  • NDSU represents the fourth team ranked in the top-150 of the Pomeroy Basketball Rankings Tarleton has faced in five games. The Bison are No. 146 as of Nov. 21.

  • The Bison are one of the most experienced squads in the nation. NDSU returns 94 percent of their scoring and 93 percent of their minutes from the 2020-21 season.

TEXAN NOTABLES

  • The Texans have now turned teams over 20-or-more times in eight-of-24 games in the Gillispie era.

  • Collectively, Tarleton shot a season-best 47 percent (25-53) from the field on Friday. The Texans also notched single-game highs in rebounds (40) and assists (17).

  • Tarleton possesses one of the top scoring defenses in the WAC, ranking third at 64.2 points per game.

  • The Texans also rank second among their conference peers in free throw percentage (73.1) and fourth in both turnover differential (+1.25) and turnovers forced (63).

  • Friday's result against Paul Quinn proved offensive progression, but the Texans are still working to find their stride at that end of the court. Tarleton is averaging 58 points per game two weeks into the season. The scoring figure is the lowest through a season-opening four-game stretch in program history since prior to 2007.

  • Montre Gipson (61 points), Tahj Small (47 points) and Shamir Bogues (32 points) have combined for 140 points through four games. The trio has accounted for 60 percent of Tarleton's total offensive output.

INDIVIDUAL NOTABLES

  • Small canned a game and season-high 16 points on 6-10 shooting vs. the Tigers. The 6-5 senior is connecting at a 50 percent clip (20-40) on the season. He ranks 11th in the WAC in field goal percentage.

  • Small has taken his game up a notch in his second season in Purple and White. He has increased his game-by-game averages in both points and rebounds. The 6-5 guard averaged 9.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest in 2020-21.

  • Gipson racked up 11 first-half points against Paul Quinn. He has now scored in double figures 17 times in his career. The 5-11 guard leads Tarleton in points per game (15.3) and assists per game (3.8).

  • Gipson, a DeSoto, Texas native has now reached double figures in scoring in eight consecutive games and nine of his last 10 outings following his effort vs. Paul Quinn. Gipson is Tarleton's active leader in career points scored (340) and minutes played (741).

  • Gipson and fellow guard Shakur Daniel are among the WAC leaders in minutes played. Daniel  ranks second in minutes per game (36.0) while Gipson is seventh (34.5).

  • Reigning Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Freddy Hicks is beginning to find his sea legs in 2021-22. He notched season-highs in points (14) and rebounds (8) vs. Paul Quinn. The performance followed up a nine-point effort against Wichita State on Tuesday.

  • Three players scored their first career points vs. Paul Quinn: Cameron Jernigan, Jaheim Holden and Bryce Brown. Jernigan flashed his long-term potential, racking up four points and four rebounds over eight minutes of action. Holden canned a 3-pointer from the left baseline that extended Tarleton's lead to 48-25 just under the 14:00 mark in the second half. A hook shot by Brown with 1:40 to go sealed the game's final score.

A WIN OVER NORTH DAKOTA STATE WOULD

  • Make Tarleton's overall record 2-3

  • Signify the Texans first nonconference road victory as a D1 program

  • Improve Gillispie's road record at Tarleton to 5-10

  • Give Gillispie his 160th career win as a D1 head coach

  • Snap a three-game road losing streak

  • Mark Tarleton's 12th victory as a D1 program

  • Be Tarleton's first win over North Dakota State in school history

A LOSS TO NORTH DAKOTA STATE WOULD

  • Dip the Texans' overall record to 1-4

  • Send Tarleton to its first four-game road losing streak in since it suffered consecutive away defeats to California Baptist, Weber State and Utah Valley from Jan. 15-29.

  • Drop Tarleton's mark vs. Summit League opponents to 1-2

  • Lower the Texans' all-time record in games vs. D1 opponents to 5-14

TARLETON-PAUL QUINN WRAP UP

  • The 42 points allowed were the second-fewest in a game under Gillispie.

  • Small and Hicks combined for 16 of Tarleton's 40 rebounds, as they finished with eight boards apiece.

  • Gipson, Daniel and Javontae Hopkins each dished out three assists.

  • Tarleton shot 59 percent (17-29) from the field in the first half.

  • The Texans never trailed in the game and led by as many as 29 points.

  • Tarleton pestered Paul Quinn into 14 first-half turnovers, 20 of which came in the game's first 11 minutes.

  • Paul Quinn was a paltry 1-19 (5.3 percent) from long range.

  • Under Gillispie, Tarleton has now held teams under 35 percent shooting on seven occasions.

  • An 11-0 run late in the first half staked Tarleton to a 27-8 lead. The Texans then doubled up Paul Quinn at 42-21 entering the intermission.

  • Tarleton is now 11-3 in home openers since 2007 and 7-3 in Wisdom Gym under Gillispie.

  • The Texans are now 6-2 all time vs. Paul Quinn and 6-0 in games played in Stephenville.

UP NEXT FOR TARLETON

Tarleton faces its second opponent ranked in the AP top-10 in No. 4 Michigan in Ann Arbor on Wednesday. The Wolverines are the first of two teams who earned No. 1 seeds in the 2021 NCAA Tournament Tarleton will play this season.

The latter of the two is the top-ranked team in the country, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, whom Tarleton draws on Nov. 29 inside The Kennel in Spokane, Washington. Tarleton will have played six of its first seven games away from home following its jaunt to the Inland Northwest.

A home-heavy December slate awaits Tarleton. The Texans play five of their next six games inside Wisdom Gym, beginning with a three-game homestand vs. Charleston Southern (Dec. 5), Dallas Christian (Dec. 7) and Southwestern Assemblies of God (Dec.). Tarleton closes out nonconference play with back-to-back home games vs. South Alabama on Dec. 17 and Air Force on Dec. 21.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Since 2007, Wisdom Gym has arguably been the toughest venue to play in over the state of Texas at any classification. Tarleton is 199-35 (.850) in home games over the last 15 years. The Texans were 6-3 at home in 2020-21. From 2007-2017, the Texans lost just 17 times at home. Tarleton posted a perfect 15-0 home record during the 010-11 season. The program's 18 home victories against one defeat marked its most home wins in a single season. Under legendary head coach and current Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, Lonn Reisman, Tarleton  went an astounding 171-22 (.886) at home from 2007 through the 2017-18 season, when he stepped down as head coach and transitioned into a full-time Athletic Director role Tarleton eclipsed two home losses just once in Reisman's final 11 years as the head man.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

"You've got a chance to have a good team. A really good team. You've got interchangeable parts, everybody's about the same size, and as you get into the season, that will become much harder to score against because you guys are tough. You won't let bigs be bigs because you're tough." - Bill Self, Kansas head coach

"Coach told us going in it was going to be a tough game, and they were going to pressure us a lot. That's something we didn't see against Michigan State, it was pretty much the opposite. Coach told us it was going to be a dog fight the whole time." - Christian Braun, Kansas guard

"Billy Gillispie's teams really get after you defensively." - Isaac Brown, Wichita State head coach

"The pressure certainly bothered us. Their game plan was really, really good, and they executed it very, very well." - Jerod Haase, Stanford head coach

PRESSURE, PUT YOU DOWN

Due to NCAA Division I transition rules, Tarleton does not qualify for NCAA statistical rankings. Had they been eligible last season, the Texans would have ranked first in the nation in steals per game (10.5), second in turnovers forced per game (19.5) and 15th in points allowed per game (62.3).

Tarleton has turned teams over 20-or-more times in 8-of-24 games under Gillispie. It has held opponents under 50 points nine times. The Texans recorded single-game highs in the Gillispie era in turnovers forced (41) and steals (28) in a 97-26 win over Southwestern Adventist on Feb. 6.

Tarleton has turned over each of its four opponents at least 20 times to begin 2021-22. The Texans' 20 forced turnovers vs. Paul Quinn were a season-high. Tarleton turned Stanford over 14 times in its regular season opener on Nov. 9. The Texans then posted a positive turnover differential against the nation's No. 3 ranked team. The Texans forced 13 turnovers and swiped the ball away nine times on at No. 3 Kansas. Tarleton limited its giveaways to nine.

The Texans rank fourth in the WAC in steals (30) and turnovers forced (63) as of Nov. 20. Bogues and Daniel lead Tarleton in steals with seven apiece.

Four players swiped the ball away at least 20 times last season. Shamir Bogues led all players with 37 steals while Daniel (32 steals), Gipson (27 steals), and Small (21 steals) joined Bogues atop the 20-steal threshold.

'IT'S PROBABLY THE HARDEST SCHEDULE IN THE COUNTRY'

The words spoken by Gillispie on Tarleton's Preseason WAC Media Day on Oct. 19 ring louder than ever.

In total, the Texans will play three teams ranked in the top-10 of the Preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll, draw six opponents who made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2021 and face 14 opponents who posted winning records last season. Abilene Christian, Gonzaga, Grand Canyon and Michigan earned automatic berths to the Big Dance in March as conference regular season and tournament champions while Kansas and Wichita State secured at-large invitations.

WHAT KEN POMEROY THINKS

The Texans are slated to play the three best teams in the country within the first three weeks of the 2021-22 season. At least, according to college basketball statistician Ken Pomeroy, they are.

Having already played Kansas, Tarleton is set to draw the three highest-rated teams in the Pomeroy College Basketball Rankings as of Nov. 20: No. 1 Gonzaga, No. 2 Kansas and No. 3 Michigan.

In total, the Texans will play nine games opposite teams ranked inside the top-150, face seven top-130 programs and draw five foes listed in the top-75. Wichita State and Stanford are ranked No. 67 and No. 90, respectively, while future foes New Mexico State (No. 111), Grand Canyon (No. 126), North Dakota State (No. 146) and Stephen F. Austin (No. 147) all cracked the top-150 of the ratings.

Tarleton is rated ninth among its conference peers at No. 222, ahead of Lamar (No. 276), Dixie State (No. 308), UTRGV (No. 310), and Chicago State (No. 357).

GIPSON RACKING UP THE ALL-WAC ACCOLADES

On Oct. 19, the 5-11 senior made history when he became the first basketball player in Tarleton's WAC and D1 era to receive Preseason All-WAC first team honors as voted on by the conference media. Gipson was one of just eight players to receive the distinction. He was also named to the Preseason Coaches' All-WAC Second Team.

The accolade continued Gipson's inceptive two-year run at Tarleton. In April 2020, he became the first-ever Division I basketball signee in Tarleton sports history when he followed Gillispie from Ranger College to Stephenville. Following a standout 2020-21 campaign, Gipson was named to the All-WAC Newcomer and Honorable mention teams. He was also the first men's or women's player in school history to receive TicketSmarter WAC Player of the Week recognition after picking up the honor for March 1-7.

Gipson earned his quartet of credentials on the strength of one of the best individual offensive seasons in the WAC last winter. He led Tarleton in points per game (15.3), assists per game (3.0) and free throw percentage (85.2) and his 50 percent mark on 3-pointers ranked first in the WAC. The 5-11 guard accounted for exactly 20 percent of Tarleton's field goals made with 106. His 290 points scored were tops on the team and represented 19.7 percent of the Texans' cumulative scoring.

FOUR ALL-WAC HONOREES IN FIRST OF FOUR D1 TRANSITION YEARS

Hicks headlined Tarleton's list of award winners last season when he was named the conference's Freshman of the Year on March 9. The award was voted on by conference head coaches, who could not vote for their own players.

No freshman in the conference enjoyed as strong a second half as the Searcy, Arkansas native. The 6-6 swingman led all WAC first-year players in scoring (8.2 ppg) and elevated his game as the schedule shifted to conference play, averaging 8.6 points and a team-high 6.4 rebounds per game. Hicks led Tarleton with three double-doubles, all of which came on the road vs. conference opponents. He posted seven double-digit scoring games, including three in Tarleton's final five WAC games.

Daniel and Small joined Gipson and Hicks atop the All-WAC pedestal, as they each were named to the All-Conference honorable mention team in March. Daniel was Tarleton's 'glue guy (7 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.6 apg) while Small was Tarleton's leading rebounder (5.8 rpg) and ranked third in the WAC in 3-point field goal percentage (45.7).
