Users of American Express Global Business Travel's Neo booking tool now can sort flight and rail options by carbon emissions levels.
The new filter option incorporates emissions data from the U.K.'s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and France's Agence de la Transition écologique, two leading standards for measuring carbon emissions, according to Bertrand Blais, vice president of product management for KDS, the French company that built Neo and was acquired by Amex GBT in 2016.
The filter takes into account distance and cabin class to assess the emissions level for a particular trip option, and users can combine the emissions filter with other criteria—for instance, to select the lowest-emission option under a certain cost level, Blais said.
Neo launched in 2013 with the option to create the greenest door-to-door itinerary but that service was discontinued in 2016. The switch to a filter model was intended with user experience and simplicity in mind, according to Blais.

"Filters are more common in the consumer market and are what users expect to find when searching for travel," said Blais. Further, the itinerary model was offered at a time when Neo only provided the door‐to-door search method for planning travel, he added.
"Today, Neo also features a single-search shopping method which lets users search for each part of the trip, like flight or hotel, individually, [and] filters are better for this method," Blais noted.
The emissions filter has been made available to all Neo users at no additional charge, according to Blais.
