CHICO — Your unemployment benefits are coming to an end and the boss hasn’t called about your job. What should you do?
Kristine Farrell understands the next steps could be difficult, but there’s place to help: The nonprofit Alliance for Workforce Development.
Based in Chico, Farrell, who is the alliance’s director of programs, will be among the speakers at an upcoming webinar to talk about finding a job.
“It’s easy for the recently unemployed to get discouraged at the first position you don’t get or when don’t get a call back from an employer.
“Right now everyone’s mentality has shifted. It’s a little negative and depressing.”
That’s why the alliance is stressing steps to take to find a job.
Dedication
Farrell says there are little steps that can make a big difference, but dedication is necessary.
Some say hunting for a job is a job in itself.
“People think they should be able to get a job right away, but they don’t realize there are hundreds of thousands of people with the same skills and experience applying for the same jobs.”
The key is not to get discouraged, she said.
“Keep trying.”

Topics for the webinar include the basics of a job search, networking, how to prepare for a job search and interview; is the search for a job the right one; and could current job skills be used in another kind of job.
The webinar includes a chance at the end to ask questions as well.
Setbacks
Farrell said that finding the right niche is important, as well as marketing oneself, but it’s also about bouncing back from the guaranteed noes.
“Sometimes the job hunter doesn’t have a target employer strategy and is being too general in their search, hoping to get anything. It makes employers wonder, ‘I wonder why you’re contacting me.’”
Another setback is as simple as putting too much information in a resume, she noted.
“Sometimes people think this bit of information or that bit is extremely important, but you don’t want to make an employer try to dig deep into the resume. You want to make it clear and concise for them.”

The alliance has tried to make getting information as simple as possible. Information on available jobs and upcoming webinars can be found on its website, Facebook page, and just by calling. For Butte County the number for the Chico office is 530-961-5125.
There’s also a chat feature on the website www.afwd.org. While that chat function is staffed Monday through Friday, the staff checks Monday for what might have come in over the weekend.

Benefits
Asked about an update to unemployment benefits, Farrell said there is no news about any replacement for the extra $600 that came from the federal government. But the regular unemployment benefit and the pandemic unemployment benefit are still available. The state has extended the benefit time from 26 weeks to 39 weeks for extra support, she said.
If an individual applied for unemployment early on but has not heard back, they are encouraged to go to their online benefit account to make sure all the details are accurate and try to call the Employment Development Department. Farrell said sometimes her office can help with early applications that have not heard back.
“It may be that some information isn’t right or something wasn’t filled out. Some people think they’ve filed a claim when they really haven’t or the state hasn’t gotten it.”
Applicants may not realize they have to certify every two weeks that they are still unemployed, she said.
