SAN LEANDRO — A man who authorities said pulled a gun on officers was shot and critically wounded by police Saturday during a search for an unrelated suspect in a similarly-colored car in the same area.

The man shot is 43 years old, authorities said, but they did not immediately identify him or announce an arrest or charges. No one else was injured.

San Leandro Police said in a press release that around 9:15 p.m. Saturday, officers had attempted pull over a silver sedan for unspecified violations in the area of 148th Avenue and Wake Avenue. The driver refused to stop and fled, finally stopping the car near 137th Avenue and School street, police said.

After stopping, police said, the driver jumped out of the car and ran, fleeing into a backyard. Police said they found a gun inside the car, but did not locate the driver.

Believing that the driver was still hiding nearby, two uniformed police officers got into an unmarked police vehicle and began searching the neighborhood.

The pair had parked at about 11:55 p.m. on 137th Avenue just east of Bancroft Avenue when a silver car — not related to the earlier incident, police said — pulled up behind the police vehicle and stopped.

The officers got out to speak to the driver; authorities said the driver, still seated behind the wheel, raised a gun above the dashboard and in the officers’ direction.

The officers fired, striking the man multiple times in his upper torso, police said. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

Police said they recovered a semi-automatic firearm at the scene. The officers were placed on administrative leave, a standard move after such a shooting.

The shooting will be investigated by both the San Leandro Police Department and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
