Sausalito City Manager Adam Politzer is retiring at the end of the year. The city is searching for his successor.

Sausalito city officials have launched a search for a new city manager.

Officials met last week to present a preliminary timeline and to gather feedback from residents about what characteristics they would like to see in a successor to Adam Politzer, who is set to retire at the end of the year. A second session is planned at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Deborah Muchmore, a personnel consultant for the city, said officials must appoint an interim city manager and then hire an executive search firm to help select a longer-term replacement. The process is expected to take four to nine months, she said.

“Bridging that gap can be done by appointing an interim city manager,” she said. “It’s a very important task. Timeliness is the key. Staff reached out to 12 qualified candidates. I know that the council has been taking this very, very seriously.”

City staffers interviewed three candidates in closed session on Wednesday. Politzer said the city will not identify the candidates. An interim appointment is expected to be announced before Nov. 11.

At the meeting planned Thursday, the council will review proposals from three executive search firms, Avery & Associates, Ralph Andersen & Associates and Wendi Brown Creative Partners.

The city has separated the hiring process into several phases, including screening preliminary candidates; selecting a candidate; and conducting reference and background checks.

“The background and reference processes will not happen in open session,” Muchmore said. “Those are confidential processes, but the final compensation for the city manager will actually be negotiated and discussed in open session.”

When Politzer took the job in 2007, the annual salary was $165,500. His salary now is $230,214.

Leadership qualities the city will seek in the next manager include good communication skills; the ability to seek input from a diverse group of stakeholders; fiscal management skills; and integrity. The city also wants a candidate who values diversity, equity and inclusion.

Steven Allison, a houseboat resident, said he is glad the city is taking diversity, equity and inclusion into consideration.

“I am outside of Sausalito city limits, in the broader unincorporated Sausalito area, and I just wanted to emphasize the importance of that vision, both in terms of lived experience and terms of vision for Sausalito and its role in Southern Marin being an important criterion,” Allison said.
