BIG RAPIDS — One little sister is going the distance to help her older brother recover from his injuries sustained in a tragic car accident.

Jordan Powers, of Big Rapids, said it would mean everything to her to be able to better assist her brother, A’Shawny Sneed during a time of need.

Sneed, a 2006 Big Rapids High graduate, was traveling with a friend in his vehicle in early August when he crashed into a hill along the side of the road and suffered serious injuries.

Following the accident, Sneed spent one month at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids before being transferred to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital to further determine his injuries.

Sneed was eventually released and able to make his return home to Big Rapids about a month and a half ago.

As a result of the crash, Sneed was paralyzed from the shoulders down and relies on family members for many tasks. But, there is hope.

“Doctors said there is a chance he can get his mobility back, but we can’t really do anything about that if we can’t get him to his appointments (in Grand Rapids),” Powers said.

Powers and her family are in the process of trying to purchase reliable transportation to get Sneed to and from his appointments at any given notice. However, any extra funds the family did have has been used on medical bills to take care of Sneed.

“We don’t have the luxury of waiting a long time,” Powers said. “If we want to reverse his injury, in any type of way, we need to do it as quickly as possible.”

Taking matters into her own hands, Powers created a GoFundMe page to help her family fund a new vehicle, suitable for Sneed and his needs.

“He’s my brother and we love him,” Powers said. “Taking care of him is not a problem, but when you’re not professionally trained to do this, it really can become a struggle.”

On a weekly basis, Sneed is required to visit his doctors in the Grand Rapids area, and there have been times a follow up the next day has caused difficulties for the family. The main issue always being transportation.

“We have to call a lot of different types of people who help transport quadriplegics,” Powers said. “And, there’s always the issue of not having enough transportation available.”

With any money raised through the GoFundMe page, Powers said it will all go toward purchasing a special type of van that will be easier for Sneed to get in and out of.

Powers said Sneed was always very adventurous growing up and enjoyed cars, skateboarding and hanging out with friends any chance he could.

“He was such an adventurous person and it’s hurtful to see him not being able to get out,” Powers said.

“To be able to get him out of the house and not make him feel like he’s still in the hospital would mean everything,” she added.
