The nationwide coronavirus wave continues to batter Oregon.
The state reported seven more deaths and 1,509 new confirmed or presumptive coronavirus cases Saturday. The number of reported cases set a record for the second day in a row.
The Oregon Health Authority on Friday warned that the rapid rise of cases poses a “clear and present threat” to hospitals’ ability to provide space and care for people suffering from COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus.
The overall official COVID-19 death toll in Oregon now stands at 819. The coronavirus is spreading out of control in much of the state.
Public-health officials say the best chance the state has to bring down the case numbers and relieve the pressure on hospitals is for people to stay at home as much as possible, embrace mask-wearing and social distancing when out in public, and follow Gov. Kate Brown’s newly instituted restrictions on gatherings.
“The main message we’re trying to put out is that, as the virus is rapidly spreading, tighten your bubble,” Oregon Health Authority senior adviser Dr. Bukhosi Dube told The Oregonian/OregonLive on Thursday.
Where the new cases are by county: Baker (9), Benton (22), Clackamas (122), Clatsop (5), Columbia (10), Coos (6), Crook (3), Curry (4), Deschutes (35), Douglas (37), Grant (11), Harney (3), Hood River (6), Jackson (63), Jefferson (8), Josephine (16), Klamath (20), Lake (7), Lane (87), Lincoln (4), Linn (45), Malheur (27), Marion (124), Morrow (10), Multnomah (414), Polk (42), Umatilla (40), Union (31), Wasco (14), Washington (223), Wheeler (1), and Yamhill (60).
New deaths: Oregon’s 813th COVID-19 death is a 76-year-old Douglas County man with underlying medical conditions. He tested positive on Oct. 29 and died on Nov. 19, at Mercy Medical Center.
The 814th COVID-19 death is an 84-year-old Jackson County man with underlying conditions. He tested positive on Oct. 24 and died on Nov. 13.
The 815th COVID-19 death is a 75-year-old Columbia County woman who had underlying conditions. She tested positive on Oct. 23 and died Nov. 19, at Legacy Emanuel Hospital.
The 816th COVID-19 death is a 77-year-old Jackson County woman who had underlying conditions. She tested positive Nov. 9 and died on Nov. 19, at her residence.
The 817th COVID-19 death is an 83-year-old Jackson County man who tested positive Nov. 10 and died Nov. 20, at his residence. Officials are working to confirm whether he had underlying conditions.
The 818th COVID-19 death is an 86-year-old Washington County man who had underlying conditions. He tested positive Nov. 2 and died Nov. 19, at his residence.
The 819th COVID-19 death is an 85-year-old Jackson County woman in Jackson County who had underlying conditions. She tested positive Nov. 12 and died Nov. 20, at her residence.
