5 Percent Of CT Residents May Have Already Had Coronavirus: CDC - Patch.com

CONNECTICUT — A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention antibody survey found that around 5.2 percent of the state's population had been infected with the coronavirus as of late May. That equates to around 185,000 potential cases in Connecticut, which is more than four times the amount of positive cases identified at the time.

For Connecticut the CDC's confidence range of residents infected with the virus at some point is between 3.8 and 6.6 percent.

The CDC partnered with commercial testing labs to estimate infection levels for four full states and a handful of large cities. Around 23 percent of New York City residents have antibodies for the virus as of late May, according to the CDC.

The survey was the second of its kind from the CDC. The first study round also included Connecticut; it estimated an overall infection rate of 4.9 percent as of May 3.

Connecticut's second survey round was conducted between May 21 and 26. It included people who had blood samples collected for reasons unrelated to COVID-19, including routine medical visits. A total of 1,800 Connecticut samples were collected.

The survey found that around 5.8 percent of females and 4.6 percent of males in Connecticut were infected.

The CDC notes that the survey comes with some caveats. It isn't a truly random survey as it relies on people whose blood was taken for routine screening or sick visits, which may not reflect the population as a whole.

The results reported by the CDC are adjusted for false positive and false negative results; they also note that it is possible that antibody levels may decrease over time and that people who previously tested positive for the presence of antibodies may at some point test negative.

The CDC also warns that the survey shouldn't be interpreted to mean people who tested positive for antibodies are immune to the virus. It is still unknown for sure how long antibodies last and what level of protection they confer to people.
